example: if you want run audio usb card on tomato you need some modules to kernel (this is like drivers to windows OS). Then you can take extras package, decompress and load needed modules

If you want webcam on usb run under tomato you also need some kernel modules. without them tomato (linux) will not detect a new hardware.
But not only a hardware... if you want use cifs but have tomato without CIFS included you can load cifs module yourself.
